Founder and Successors
The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha sustains the universal value of Hindu culture—encouraging devotion to God by imbibing such faith in all aspects of life.
Founder of Swaminarayan Sampraday
1781 - 1830
Bhagwan Swaminarayan is the founder of the Swaminarayan Sampraday. He is worshipped as the supreme God by his followers. His teachings are encapsulated in the Shikshapatri and Vachanamrut.
"In happiness and sorrow, in joy and grief, consider God as your sole refuge."
First Spiritual Successor
1785 - 1867
Gunatitanand Swami was the first spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. He served as the Mahant of Junagadh mandir for 40 years and his teachings are compiled in the Swamini Vato.
"Remain in the awareness of God and you will not fall prey to worldly temptations."
Second Spiritual Successor
1829 - 1897
Bhagatji Maharaj was the second spiritual successor in the lineage. He emphasized the importance of the Guru-disciple relationship and propagated the philosophy of Akshar-Purushottam.
"To attain God, one must surrender to the God-realized Guru."
Third Spiritual Successor
1865 - 1951
Shastriji Maharaj formally established the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) in 1907. He built six magnificent mandirs and initiated 500 paramhansas.
"The true disciple is one who obeys the commands of the Guru and God."
Fourth Spiritual Successor
1892 - 1971
Yogiji Maharaj was known for his boundless love and compassion. He initiated children and youth into the Swaminarayan faith and sent swamis to East Africa, UK and USA to spread the faith globally.
"Fill your heart with love for God and hatred for no one."
Fifth Spiritual Successor
1921 - 2016
Pramukh Swami Maharaj was the fifth spiritual successor who transformed BAPS into a global organization. Under his leadership, over 1,100 temples were built worldwide, including the Akshardham complexes.
"In the joy of others, lies our own."
Sixth Spiritual Successor
1933 - Present
Mahant Swami Maharaj is the present and sixth spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. He was ordained by Pramukh Swami Maharaj and travels extensively to inspire devotees worldwide.
"Progress is achieved by instilling God in our lives."
